FORMER NFA board member Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi may be under probe from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over his activities in the NFA but the former Shooting Stars Sports Club manager still influential in Nigerian football .

At the recent Osun State NFA primaries, Ogunjobi who was impeached from the NFA board alongside his boss Sani Lulu and Amanze Uchegbulam was against former Super Eagles manager and favourite, Chief  Adegboye Onigbinde.

Chief Ogunjobi  reportedly  said Chief  Onigbinde will  not emerge  as winner from the zone  and he lived up to his boast when the primaries produced Ogunjobi’s man as winner.

Onigbinde told Saturday Sports that the issue was not that he lost but the manner  Chief Ogunjobi ensured that he lost. “It is amazing what Ogunjobi did and said during the primaries. He vowed that I would not win and did everything to put his man there.

At this stage of our development, it is strange that things like this still happen.  It is strange that Ogunjobi still has a strangle hold on football in Osun state and by extension Nigeria.

“Few days ago, Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola had a meeting with three of us -Ogunjobi, myself and one other. The governor told him that he wanted me to represent the state at the NFA board. Right before the governor, Ogunjobi told the governor that I will not represent the state and that nobody will vote for me, because of the things I have been saying about the NFA.

The governor did not say anything and that too surprised me. At the primaries, he did everything and ensured that  somebody  else  emerged  from Osun”, Onigbinde said.

The FIFA committee member said he never wanted to take part in any election but had to take up the form when calls started pouring in for him to contest.

“ By God’s grace I am still in CAF and FIFA for a year and half, so I do not really want to get into the NFA. But when people started  urging me to get into the NFA so that we can implement some of the things I have been saying, I thought it wise to do so.

But given what happened at the Osun primaries and the likes of Ogunjobi, I am disturbed and worried for our football. If people like Ogunjobi can overrule the governor and still go ahead to install his man at the primaries, it goes along way to show that he still has football in a strangle hold, which is dangerous for our football.

“People have been asking me what do we do with people like Ogunjobi and I have continued to say that it is not a one-man war. Nigerians have to resist what is happening now. In my opinion, it is the Presidency that can stop what is happening now and that was why I was happy when President Goodluck Jonathan decided to withdraw Nigeria from international competitions for two years.

We could have used that period to reorganise our football and put things in their proper place. But people who are benefiting from what is on ground went to the President to convince him to rescind the decision.

What I think we could have done was to ignore FIFA and carry on with our reorganisation. The worst that could have  happened was a ban.  I strongly believe only the Presidency can stop the rot in our football”, Onigbinde said.
